Enteg Implements BI at Hero Honda Motors Ltd.
Introduction
The joint venture between India's Hero Group and Honda Motor Company, Japan has not only created the world's single largest two wheeler company but also one of the most successful joint ventures worldwide.
Over 25 million Hero Honda two wheelers tread Indian roads today. These are almost as many as the number of people in Finland, Ireland and Sweden put together!
Hero Honda has consistently grown at double digits since inception; and today, every second motorcycle sold in the country is a Hero Honda. Every 30 seconds, someone in India buys Hero Honda's top -selling motorcycle – Splendor.
Hero Honda bikes currently roll out from three globally benchmarked manufacturing facilities. Two of these are based at Dharuhera and Gurgaon in Haryana and the third state of the art manufacturing facility was inaugurated at Haridwar, Uttrakhand in April 2008. These plants together are capable of producing 4.4 million units per year.
Business Requirements
Hero Honda has been using SAP R/3 for the past several years. The reporting systems that were in place for the MM, QM,SD, PP and FI modules were mainly operational in nature. Reporting on key performance indicators had not kept pace with the usage of SAP within the organization. A tremendous need was felt to collate data representing the company’s operations and present them in the form of easy to read dashboards to enable the Management to monitor the company’s operations.
In order to meet these requirements, Hero Honda was looking for a partner to develop dashboards for top management viewing on a daily basis. In addition, the company was looking to migrate the already existing queries across all the modules implemented. Reconciliation of the queries with the backend R/3 system and automation of the data loading using the process chain without manual intervention were additional objectives.
Enteg as Implementation Partner
Enteg had a track record of previous successful implementations of dashboards using SAP BW and Enterprise Portal technologies. In addition, Hero Honda was aware of Enteg’s track record of projects being executed on time and within budget. For this specific project, some of the aspects offered by Enteg that found favor with Hero Honda included:
- Dashboards with VC the state-of-the-art technology
- Process chain for loading data automatically
- Migration of queries and reconciliation of the same with Backend system
- Implementation of BI 7 instead of migration
Based on these factors, Hero Honda chose Enteg as its implementation partner to implement Management dashboards and to migrate existing queries.
Implementation Highlights
The project was implemented in 6 calendar months with 5 consultants from Enteg.
Areas of implementation:
- Dashboards:
A number of reports in the areas of Sales performance, Inventory, Accounts Receivables and Marketing performance were created as dashboard reports. These critical operational KPIs are being used to manage the day-to-day operations of World largest two wheeler manufacturer.
- Queries:
Large number of queries across different modules SD, MM, PP and FICO
How did Enteg make it easy for them to address their challenge?
Queries had to be migrated from BI3.0 to BI 7.0 and its reconciliation had to done with the source system.
The main challenge to be addressed was on loading data which had been discontinued in the old BW system. This we addressed in the new implementation with Process Chain.
A consolidated dashboard was not available for the top management to analyze their business on daily basis. This was achieved through the implementation of dashboards.
Business Benefits
- A platform to gather, store, analyze and provide access to data to help decision makers make better decisions.
- The presentation of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) on a daily basis enhanced the visibility across the organization to the management.
- Reconciliation with the source system ensured the reliability of KPIs presented in the dashboards. Management could rely totally on the dashboards without the need for other reporting tools
- From a technical standpoint, the automation of data load ensured that there was no need for any manual process to have the data loaded for reporting purposes
