The Business Situation

Although Ranbaxy had the manpower to physically handle its business transactions, it wanted to leverage the Net to further enhance its operations, improve efficiency and increase customer response. This $465-million company, with its operations spread across 22 countries, could not afford to lag behind in connectivity in this Internet era.

Ranbaxy had already implemented its SAP ERP with the idea of improving business processes within the organization. It also had some kind of a web presence. Ranbaxy began to explore handling EDI using SAP software, in response to customer interest in submitting POs electronically instead of via third-party systems. Using EDI would both streamline the entry of orders into the SAP software and help eliminate the inconsistencies between the information in the different geographies. Majority of Ranbaxy US, UK and Germany orders were generated by EDI. Live integration was required between ERP and EDI.

Why SAP PI

Driven by a desire to minimize complexity and make the most of the common system architecture it was creating with SAP software, Ranbaxy chose SAP NetWeaver PI. SAP PI provides rich set of mapping tools and structures for various known EDI standards. For the US and European geographies, the frequency of documents was almost 200+ per day. It was a round the clock data transfer. Being an enterprise quality integration tool for integration, SAP PI ensured scalability and high availability.

Choice of Enteg as Implementation Partner

Enteg implemented SAP PI for Ranbaxy Labs. Enteg was a specialist in Enterprise Application Integration. Enteg had implemented similar solutions for ABB and Sony the previous year. Based on its capability, Enteg was awarded the Project.

It was one of the first implementations of SAP PI in the country. The process integration was done for NHS, UK and Phoenix, Germany acquisitions of Ranbaxy and SAP PI became the sole bridge for business documents from these companies.

For Phoenix, Germany it was a special type of EDI standard being used in the German pharmaceutical industry.

For NHS, UK it was c-XML. Technically, it was file to SAP bi-directional flow.

There were three consultants on the job and it took over 2.5 months to complete the project with vigorous testing.
